A very warm welcome to Half a Sixpence Specialists in Unusual Gifts, Presents & Toys |
About Us

'Half a Sixpence' was established at Evegate in the early 1980s and has changed hands several times over the years. In August 2003, the business was purchased in a somewhat run down state by its current owners, Liz and Richard Walton, after they took early retirement from their proper jobs and wanted something to fill their time. Little did they realize how successful their wielding of the proverbial new broom would be. They have seen the business go from strength to strength and are gratified at the increasing number of loyal customers who return time and time again. At the end of April, 2010, we relocated the business from the first floor granary and oast roundels to a completely refurbished area on the groundfloor of the same building. Consequently, with far better access, particularly for the disabled and mothers with pushchairs, we believe this to be a significant step forward. Certainly, the initial response from our customers has been universally positive, despite the fact that we regretably no longer have art gallery facilities. However, we continue to display and sell the work of selected local artists and craftsmen. Our aim is to offer a wide and interesting range of gifts and art at fair prices and to offer a that high level of old fashioned service so sadly lacking in the impersonal High Street shops. Our selling prices are based on cost, not on a 'what can we get away with' basis, a refreshing change in itself! If we buy an item cheaply, you get a bargain, simple as that. This ensures that whatever you buy from 'Half a Sixpence' will be excellent value. We love end-of-range items as they so often represent great value and spend many hours searching for them through our diverse range of suppliers. We would love to announce that all our stock is made in the UK, but, with such a varied range, it is virtually impossible if the shop is to remain competitive. However, wherever possible we try to buy from organizations that operate a Fair Trade policy. Having said that, we are proud to represent several local artists and craftsmen whose work is on our walls or shelves. From April 2008, we devoted part of our shop to a selection of carefully chosen top quality secondhand books at extremely keen prices. Part of our profits from book sales is donated to the Pilgrims Hospices in East Kent. We hope you enjoy browsing around this website and look forward to seeing you should you be in our locality.
